Chapel Bay Fort

Chapel Bay Fort, on the southern shore of Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, is a Grade II Listed Building〔(Chapel Bay Fort, Angle ) British Listed Buildings, accessed 23.05.14〕 which belongs to a series of forts built as part of the inner line of defence of the Haven following the Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom.
The fort is located some 2 km from the village of Angle, and is also known as 'Chapel Bay Battery'. Construction began in 1890, and was completed in 1891 at a cost of £11,779.〔Phillips, Benjamin A ''Pembrokeshire's Forts & Military Airfields 1535 - 2010'', Logaston Press, 2013 ISBN 9781906663735〕 The battery was the first fortification in the area to be built of mass concrete. It could accommodate 91 men, and had mess room and sick bay facilities. Its initial complement was three ten inch rifled muzzle-loading guns.〔 Throughout WW1 the fort remained in military hands, but it was decommissioned in 1920. It was sold to the Angle Estate in 1932. The battery was used in WW2 when a mining observation post was built on the site. In recent years the fort was acquired privately, and now functions as a museum, following a £500,000 grant from the Welsh Assembly.〔(Chapel Bay Fort, Angle; Carew Cheriton airfield and Dale to benefit from £500,000 Defence of the Realm Welsh Assembly funding ) Western Telegraph Article, 12.05.2010〕 The site opened to the public in April 2015.〔(Victorian fort in Pembrokeshire opens doors to public ) Article, www.BBC.co.uk, 23.03.2015〕
